If this doesn't prove I'm out there sometimes, nothing will. Has the idea of using thread finish on leader knots? I always have some left over and with a little prep I could treat several. Might allow the knot to pass through guides? What say thee?

Why not just some kind of super glue? Or perhaps even better, while watching some knot tying videos on Youtube, I saw a product called Loon's UV Knot Sense. It's a UV cure that cures in direct sunlight. The video I watched the guy was sitting outside, but it wasn't what I would consider real bright sunny conditions, and it cured pretty fast. If I were to estimate, maybe 5 - 10 seconds. The guy in the video swears by it.

I'm thinking thread finish, with its' much longer cure time, wouldn't be such a good idea. And would be useless if having to tie a new leader on, while out on the water.

UV products, often branded in fly fishing for the exact purpose you suggest, are available and do work.

Although it happens, I contend that knots do not belong inside the guide train.

Ernie ..... were it fly fishing, I would definitely agree. But fishing with casting gear or spinning gear, it's pretty much a must do kind of thing. I just don't see the point of some instances that I've read, of the leader being so long the knot makes it to the reel spool.

That's definitely too dang long in my book.

If the fly rod is at least 8 feet long, it is possible and usually correct, to land a fish without the line to leader knot coming inside of the tiptop. For quick carry from spot to spot, you can simply loop the leader around the back of the reel and back up to the stripping guide and hook the fly there.

Ernie - As a surf fisherman, I would contend that knots not only belong inside the guides but should be 6 turns around the spool, when fishing on the beach. When using power casts, such as OTG, pendulum,etc, the leader should be a minimum of 10lb per ounce of lead to avoid breakages. A few ounces of lead is a missile if it goes sideways. The long leader also protects the main line from damage from the sand, shells, etc found on the sea bed. If using braid, even more so. With the popularity of beach fishing around the world, no wonder there are so many leader knot videos on YT and other platforms, and many forum discussions about the strongest/easiest/smallest.

My fly leaders don’t get into the guides so I am assuming you are talking about baitcasting or spinning leaders. For lighter leaders, a well tied Alberto knot passes through smoothly. For heavier leaders (about 20lbs), an FG not is very smooth. I clip my Alberto knot tags very close and tie two half hitches over the cut end with the braid. I can’t tie an FG strong enough on thin leaders. Hollow core braid is even smoother in heavier sizes, but I haven’t yet stepped up to its cost.
