Chuck for flex coat wrapper/dryer

Does anyone know of a check that will fit on the flex coat wrapper/dryer that adjusts to different sizes? I want to be able to clamp a butt end and also be able to clamp the small end piece sections. The chuck that came with it is way to big for the small end sections and I don’t want to have to take it off and add the smaller one every time I want to change section sizes.
Thanks, Dave Re: Chuck for flex coat wrapper/dryer

I don't know of any third party chuck that would fit directly on the Flexcoat wrapper/dryer. I'm guessing you could add a 3 or 4 jaw chuck but you'd loose the slip clutch aspect of your unit. You could look at something like this: [www.amazon.com]
Flexcoat sells an option to accommodate different sizes... [flexcoat.com] What I do is just use the larger chuck that came with unit and use Blank Extensions like these [mudhole.com]. I ended up just making 3 or 4 out of scrap blank and EVA butt caps when working with smaller sections. Just arbor up your extension tool with masking tape to fit your small blank section and chuck into larger size diaphragm. Works fine for me. Hope this helps Re: Chuck for flex coat wrapper/dryer

Thanks for the reply kevin. I doubt that chuck will fit the shaft of the flex coat? I did see the different size rings that flex coat offers, I was just hoping for a one and done chuck and not have to mess with zip ties. I will probably just make up one from an old broken rod and use that. Re: Chuck for flex coat wrapper/dryer

David,
If you like everything about the flex coat wrapper/dryer, but don't like the chuck - simply remove the head stock and replace the head stock and chuck with a different head stock and chuck of your choosing. Then, use a belt drive with pulleys and belts to connect the new head stock to the chuck. In particular the use of the Taig chuck, the Alps chuck and others have proven to be solid performers. For example the Renzetti high end wrapper uses the equivalent of the Taig chuck. The Alps chuck is also a knock off on the Taig chuck. Or, if you did not want to use pulleys and belts you could do an end mount and then use a coupling with appropriate straight line connectors to connect the new head stock shaft to the flex coat drive system. For example, the Renzetti Head Stock and chuck: [www.rdflyfishing.com] For example, the Alps head stock and chuck: [batsonenterprises.com] For example - the Taig Lathe head stock: [taigtools.com] For example, the 3 inch taig 3 jaw chuck: [taigtools.com] This picture is one of the head stock that I built for myself many years ago, using a small dc motor (inside the pvc tube) A nylon block for a head stock with a pair of 1/2 inch ball bearings to support the chuck shaft. An industrial 1/2 inch keyless chuck. Timing belts and pulleys to connect the motor to the chuck shaft and a Shank from Shamrock industries to use in the 1/2 inch chuck to convert the shaft from the motor to a 3/4 x16 thread on to which the Taig chuck is attached. If I am wrapping guides on a rod that does not have the butt cap in place - I remove the shank from the keyless chuck and insert a tapered mandrel that goes up inside the rod blank for a secure grip. The soft aluminum jaws on the Taig chuck have been modified from their original pointed shape to be inside concave jaws that match the shape of the typical grip so that there is very good gripping of the rod butt with little pressure and thus no markings on the grip from doing the wrapping work. The replicable masking tape over the jaws give a bit of additional gripping ability and also to help minimize any marking of the rear grip . David,
Go to flex coat and order a couple of every size chuck membrane that they have with different sized holes. Then, as your need changes, just pop off one membrane for another one that better fits your needs. Note: I have yet to see a rod blank or a rod butt slip out of a correctly size flex coat chuck and membrane. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
