Hi all. It has been a while since I have built anything, but I now have some blanks and parts to put together. I am building 4 jigging rods. 3 of them are 2 piece, 502 Black hole Cape Cod Specials. 80g, 150g, and 450g. The other is a North Fork Composites slow pitch blank 4oz-7oz. (feels like a nice blank, BTW) I have only previously built casting rods as that is what I like to fish. Also building a Phenix Redeye RTX-700MH-3-B as a spinning rod.
The 80g CCS will be paired with a Stella 6000, and the 150g CCS will be paired with a 10000 Stella. The other 2 blanks will be conventional. I am using the Fuji DPS non-trigger seats for all of these, with the long nut, size 20. MN guides for the two smaller conventional rods, and HN guides for the 450g rod. The CCS 2 piece 502 blanks are split so the upper section starts where the grip / butt ends, and the upper section is 37.5" long including the ferrule, I believe. Then blanks arrive next week, so I do not have actual measurements yet. I do not know where to start with spinning guides. I started looking... It looks like a 30 size stripper guide might be a start. As this is such a short blank, I think the reduction in sizes may be pretty quick and close. Thinking a 30,20,16,12,10, and a tip top? I have used calculators for my casting builds, so I am familiar with that, but I do not know where, or anything about the spinning calculators. I can barely use a spinning reel. :) Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. Especially from those who know these rods. TIA! What type and size line will you be using? You can very likely skip all those sizes - generally 3 different sizes will do the job as well or better than trying to use each size offered. The line path will dictate the sizes you should use. Possibly it'll be 30-20-10 and then as many additional 10's as needed. But you need to plot that line path to be sure.
There is an article in the online library here on NGC for spinning rods. ............. Re: Help with guides for Black Hole Cape Cod Special 502 spinning jigging rod

Thank you, Tom.
I am just seeing this. Line will probably be PE2. I found more info online, and have been taping on different combos of guides. Right now it has a KW30-25-16-10-10-10TT It is such a short length to work with. I chose a 30 for the stripper because it was so close to the reel face, about 18" away. I tried to drop down more quickly, but with 5 guides and a TT, the size 20 instead of the 25 put it at a pretty steep angle. With the current configuration, I think it looks okay as far as pathway. Previously, nothing did. I did not try 30-20-10, so I will. Thank you Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/13/2024 12:44PM by Chris Harban. You don't need tht many different guide sizes. That's sort of thing is for the eye, not the line. Try the 30-20-10's.
