Best way to add a section of color to a rod blank?

So I got to thinking about ways to add short sections of color to a blank.

I’ve seen marbling and thread wraps used but I was wondering if anyone has used an appropriately cut sheet of colored vinyl to accent a section of rod with color?

Any other techniques you have seen used?

Just about anything will work, don't get limited.

I like abalone, the newer stuff if pretty easy to use, looks very good for smaller areas. For a whole "section," whatever that is, could get pretty pricey.

Hello Seth.

Heck yes there are a million ways to bring in color from holographic tape to shrink and rod wraps, you can literally add anything you like.
Here is a little something I did thats a little outside the boa:

Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines.

I am of the school, why would anyone want to make a fishing tool gaudy? I am a fly fisherman and much prefer the understated organic look of fly rods! NO BLING !

As Henry Ford said about selling his cars.
Everyone can have what ever color that they want, as long as that color is black.

I feel about the same way with fishing rods.

Tough to beat basic black for a fishing rod.

Simple, understated, and it simply catches a lot of fish.

I will sometimes say to someone who wants color is to simply take a piece of paper and have their child or children do their thing on it with a box of crayons, hang the picture on the wall of the rod shop, and enjoy the Color.

Best wishes

Phil & Roger - Your opinions - but not helpful to address his question so why bother even replying. Keep fishing your boring rods that have no personality….

Seth - as has been mentioned, lots of options depending on what tit want to do - paint, vinyl is used often, printable vinyl with images of your choosing, snakeskin, tobacco leaves, kelp leafs and others are just a tiny set of options

Well, as it turns out I'm considering the spray paint techique. I just broke a rod today for a grand dtr and I'm sick about it, she picked the colors and at the time a particular mfr offered almost anything you could ask for in color. That's no longer the case. Kids and wives love color choices. Frankly, I do too and have built several Red/white/blue rods.

It’s a shame RodGeeks dropped the color range when moving back to the Us - they claim they are going to add more colors back….

Until then Don Shaffar from Backbone Custom Rods can paint it any color you’d like and even pick up from Mudhole, American Tackle & GetBit, paint and ship saving the shipping cost….

I've reached out to RodGeeks asking about any change in color options.
