I am building a custom Winston ( dark emerald green ) fly rod. It will have black nickel hardware and the reel seat inserts will have green and brownish tan color. It has been suggested to me to use a wine colored thread on the build. At first I was thinking “really?”, but as I thought about it the wine color sounds interesting. Does anyone out there have any thoughts about this color scheme? Re: Wine thread on Winston blank

Only you can decide what looks good to you. Thread is cheap - try it. At least wrap a bit on the blank and wet with alcohol - or better yet soak with some epoxy to see then wipe/pull it off. Do it in a section to be covered by the grips if concerned Re: Wine thread on Winston blank

Garnet on dark green looks good. Re: Wine thread on Winston blank

I used the ProWrap Merlot color thread on a small 2wt fly rod, natural graphite color, I built last year and it came out great. Added a little white tip to the lower wraps In a nod to the white tips on a brook trout fin.
I agree with what’s been said above, to a few wraps and see how you feel about it. If you like the looks, you have your answer. Re: Wine thread on Winston blank

Thank you for your responses. I have done the trial wraps many times before and was more curious if anyone had ever used that combination before and what they thought about it. I have been building rods for about 18-20 years now and have read up about many different topics over the years on this site but never really posted anything, so I thought today why ask as there seem to be a lot of very knowledgeable people on this site!
Again, thanks. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
