Where to find and how to apply Decorative carbon fiber?

Hello guys,

Where am I able to find those decorative sections of carbon fiber that you can sometimes find on store bought rods? See the Dobyns Fury series for example.

I am assuming it’s some kind of carbon fiber sleeve or maybe a section of carbon fiber cloth cut and wrapped around the blank?

How are you guys doing it?

Thanks!

Mudhole has them and they have a video on how to install them.

I'm building one now that will have only carbon fiber decorative and guide wraps. It is a prototype. I'll post pics when its done.

Are you talking about their 3K sleeves they use for building grips?

If so, I am guessing you just cut your section off of that sleeve and then apply similar to as if you are building a grip?

Ok, I give up, I just looked at the Dobyns site and no carbon decoration on the rods. Are you talking about the wrap on the American Tackle Matrix blanks or the overwrapped blanks Batson Rainshadow just came out with recently.

The Fury series (I have one) has a CF (in looks only) wrap between the rear grip and the butt.

Seth,
Another option would be to purchase woven CF sleeve cloth from Soller Composites. They also have woven hybrid sleeves; CF / Aramid, CF / FG in numerous colors. Since it is dry sleeving, it will fit snugly onto the blank and follow its taper = no shimming. Simply slide the sleeve onto the blank, wet it out with epoxy and you’re done. Due to not being a structural piece, regular thread wrap epoxy could be employed rather than structural laminating epoxy; although I would personally use structural epoxy, a light / thin version of thread epoxy should penetrate / soak into the fibers just fine. They also have special heat shrink tubing which provides a very smooth outer surface after cured.

Mark, I have a rod on the dryer now with the carbon sleeve both for decoration and guide wraps. This stuff blooms like a flower the moment it is cut. I had to experiment with it a few times to get it to perform. When it gets its final coat I'll post a pic.

Didn’t think about the blooming issue. I’ll have to look into those Sleeves mentioned above. Maybe I’d have luck covering the bloom with a wrap.

Some of those fiberglass sleeves they have might pass for carbon fiber as a cheap alternative.

The “blooming” issue can be controlled / countered with simple “end wraps” as employed with typical “butt wraps”, or simply conceal the ends of the sleeving with the reel seat or butt cap, or even just shrink tubing. I have used hybrid CF / Aramid sleeving in lieu of “slick butts” or “tough butts” on a number of offshore builds, and because of the Aramid, they are much tougher than any nylon tube could ever imagine to be.

"Carbon Black". Carbon fiber braided sleeve only on wraps and guides. Not finished yet. Needs a good wet sand and a final coat of PG.
