Epoxy on eye of guide?
Posted by: David Janes (---)

So as the subject states, I didn't see that I got a small drop of epoxy on two of the eyes of my guides. What would be the best way to remove it? I'm hesitant of using a blade as I could inadvertently scratch the eye. they are titanium fly rod guides.

All the help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Just an FYI, but I did this on my first rod build. I pondered about it and decided to leave it. Epoxy dries smooth as a baby's rear end. I've fished the you know what out of that rod with no ill effects. Naturally, I don't endorse the idea of putting epoxy on the guide eyelets, and I would never leave it if it were for a customer. But, again, there were no ill effects. I keep looking for grooves every time I change out the line, nothing so far. I only use mono on this particular rod.

If it is a metalic guide such as the minima, I'd heat it and try to pick it loose. If it is a ceramic guide, I's still heat it and pick it as a first step. If that doesn't work, then use a blade. Ceramic is much tougher than you might think. Ask Norman Miller about the abuse test he did on ceramic guides. I replicated his test and was surprised at just how much abuse a ceramic guide can take without any ill effects.
