Norman and Michael, thank you both for your responses concerning how the NFC soft touch grips wear. If I build any more rods for personal use, I will definitely consider using them. Then look pretty sweet. Kind of an air of sophistication look they got going on. lol

David, the soft touch grips have quickly become my favorite of all the grips I’ve used. I’m sure you’ll like them as well.

I don't subscribe to the no weight crowd. Almost every rod feels better with 5-10 grams of counter balance.

If you emphasize a clean light build everywhere else, the overall rod weight will still be very light.

I use tungsten putty for pine car derby kits.

One example of adding weight to the extreme is my Megabass Lavante Laviathian. It is a 7'10" swimbait rod rated to 8oz and it weighed 185 grams. Super light but tip heavy as all @#$%& even with a 10oz reel. I shrink wrapped the grips and added a 25 gram tungsten disk to the butt cap. The rod now weighs 210 grams, very respectable, but feels like a fairy wand in hand. My buddy who has the same rod bought the same tungsten disc on @#$%& and anyone who's held the rod says it is night and day. I posted pictures on another forum, but it moved the balance point from 5" in front of the reel to right at the locking nut.

It is an easy test, tape a nickel to your rod butt. Every nickle is 5 grams.

As for the rod, SICK! I have been wanting to try one of these APG. I see you spiraled opposite of handle, any reasoning? Trying my first simple spiral this week.

I don’t remember where I acquired the logic but the reel handle opposite of the spiral should help counter any twist. I build on the spine so it should be irrelevant.

I finally found some time to wrap the guides, we added another boy to the Tarr clan! Having 3 kids under 5 doesn’t allow much time to finish my rod build.

I’m using ProWraps RNS-A Teal color to blend the tread to the blank and added a few turns of black for an accent.

Finally finished epoxy… I was playing with adding some colors but ultimately decided to keep it monochromatic.
