Fuji Guide Set Help

Hey folks. I’ve been away from RodBuilding for at least 15 years and I’m just getting back at it. I tried searching, but couldn’t find nothing. I’m building a 6‘6“ casting rod on a CRB color series blank. My cousin is planning on using the rod for walleye jigging. The guide set that I bought was a Fuji FGK6, 10 piece Aconite set that consists of a 7,6,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5. This just seems way too small. Did I get the wrong set? If not, what would be a good spacing starting point? Thank you in advance for any help.

There's a guide spacing formula on Angler's Resource that could get you started. Then, put them on temporarily with tubing, tape, whatever you want and then perform a static load test and adjust accordingly. Make sure you have the handle and reel seat and tip top installed before you do the test.

Here's the Fuji guide spacing software.

Here are a couple of tutorials on static load testing.

The size seems about normal to me, but I prefer those smaller guides.

Regarding spacing, I would begin by placing the first reduction guide 20-22” from the face of the reel and install the tip top. Then, tape the remaining reduction guide(s) and running guides spaced out incrementally between the first reduction and tip top. Static test to determine the correct placement and number of guides required. Being a 6’6” rod, I would suspect that you will have about 3-4 running guides left over with that sort of a rod.

No that is correct. The smaller guides eliminate the "wave" in the line allowing it to go straighter through the guides. More distance and most likely better accuracy. You also need more guides because they are lower to the blank and to keep the line off it. Place the butt guide about 20" from the reel face and the first running guide about 3.25" from the tip top. I would use 8 or 9 guides total plus the tip top. My set up would be a Fuji RV6 followed by all 5s or a 5 and the rest 4s.
