Embroidery thread feed position - vertical or horizontal?

As I understand it - Madeira thread is on a cone shaped holder and the thread is designed to come off vertically.
Have anyone used this 1100 yd. Spool when horizontal- like on a Renzetti thread carriage?
Or do you recommend transferring the thread to the smaller straight spools?

Hello Jon.

This is from Roger Wilson, but I have one just like it, and it works good.

Robert,
Thanks for sharing.
Yes, a board and a piece of wire that has a few bends in it does a very nice job to hold a large spool of thread.
In my case, I route the thread off the top of the spool, then over and back down so that the thread is now running horizontal at the same level as when I pull thread off the sides of small thread spools.
In my case, I then, run it up and through a tension device to run to the rod blank for guide wrapping.

Another You tube video to illustrate - the same for use with a regular sewing machine.

Also, some interesting thoughts on different types of thread and how the individual threads are made:

That looks like the way to go - only problem I have is a tensioner that would have to be mounted to my Renzetti thread carriage as it is designed to hold tension on the spool itself.
Ideas?

I run it horizontal all the time in my Rail Wrapper carriage (Al Engling). I did get the cone adapters which “arbor up” the cone’s lower end to fit nicely in the threaded rod of the carriage. Depending on which side of the carriage I had the spool on it will feed over or under - or left or right. Works fine either way

I'm just spit balling here, but if you have a reel spooling station, spool that thread onto an old, cheapy reel and then use the reel spool on your rod wrapper.

Daryl,
That’s not a bad idea! If nothing else and I have issues with the thread slipping when under tension because of the cross wound Madeira thread spool- I could definitely transfer the thread to a spinning reel spool and either use the spool on the carriage or easily transfer the thread from the reel spool to a thread spool which would then have the thread stacked instead of wound.

Jon,
Your solution is simple, if you wish to use bulk thread pulling it off the top of the spool.

Simply purchase a spring/disk style of tension device and install it into your wrapper system.

Take care
Roger

I thought about that Roger but a lot I have read mentioned fuzzies after coming through the tensioner - Maybe that was because of to much tension.

Jon,
Simply put, virtually identical tensioners are used in the sewing industry world wide - and the machines are used to create billions of articles of clothing every year. The same tensioners are used in the embroidery industry world wide to create embroidered objects every year with no issues.

I have used the same tensioner for the last many years and as long as I am using nylon thread have had zero issues, except for two spools of thread which were defective and had issues.

But, as always, it is your choice on the use of tools to do your rod builds.

Best wishes

Thanks Roger !
I think I will go that route and make the device mentioned above for moving the thread off to the top as the spool is designed to be used.
FYI - the 12V control system I got from you is still running strong and I love it!

For those that were following - I tried wrapping with the Madeira cones on the carriage the same way as a small spool and it seems to work fine that way - just a little bit of “sticky” occasionally but it didn’t affect anything.
Then, I put a small spool on a blank and the Madeira on the carriage and actually transferred the thread for the Madeira to the spool by spinning the lathe as if I was wrapping - worked perfectly - the spool looked like the ones you buy.
Just wanted to update for anyone that had the same question I did.
Thanks to all above for the posts!
