CRB - IS661L

My buddy is looking for a light tackle bass set up. Uses 10 lb and 1/8-3/8 oz. Thinking this is the rod I would like to use.
Thoughts on the blank for this? Assuming it should have enough back bone?

Doing Rangers Theme like that it comes in blue. (And the price)

I would personally go with 7’ ML paired with a 3000 reel. You can literally do anything with that setup.

Yes he has other rods for the “anything” set up. He wants something light and fun for freshwater bass fishing

Well, I don’t think you can go wrong with that blank. FTR, I’m getting ready to build the same blank, but in the ML I mentioned in my first post.

My first ever build was a CRB 6’6” ML and I just completed 6’6” L rod for my uncle.

I’m not a fan of the CRB blanks at all. I originally bought the 6’6” ML for bigger stream trout felt like it was a Med-Mod/fast rod. The power and action on the rod were completely off from what was expected. It was way too stiff for light trout lures and live bait. It makes a decent bass rod but there’s much better options. out there like RodGeeks C266ML. Those rods are prefect for trout fishing and finesse bass.

I then bought the 6’6” L as a trout rod for my dad thinking maybe I just received the wrong blank but went 1 power less. That light action rod felt nearly identical to the 6’6” ML. Way too stiff and too much power for what the blank is advertised as.

I know people like them, but I wasn’t impressed with CRB by any means. For the price I’d rather pick up a RodGeeks C266ML (which I built on to replace the CRB IS661ML and IS661L). Those C266ML blanks are great for the money. Perfect action and power for larger trout streams and finesse bass.

The CRB IS661 is a good light tackle blank for bass if he likes a shorter rod (6 1/2 ft).

You should check out the CRB IS701L blank it is basically the same as the IS661 except it is 7 ft.

I exclusively bass fish and use a IS701L when I bank fish and I have two IS701ML rods when I fish from a boat.

They are inexpensive and durable.

Have fun

John

Some CCS numbers would be great in a discussion like this. I wish I could compare these blanks in power and action. That would tell the tale.

Is there any data already recorded on the CCS data base? You could probably just scroll down the thread list and find the data base/thread and see!

There aren't any CRB blanks in the database that I could tell. I just looked, as I was also interested in the numbers on another blank.

My last build was a rodgeeks blank i like the blank but it took them weeks to process and fill the order. Are they usually pretty slow on turn around time?

Hi Evan, we're sorry to hear you didn't care for the CRB blanks. CRB blanks are loved by tens of thousands of users yearly. They hit a price, quality, color, variety, and overall value point in the market and make very good finished rods.

As you are a new rod builder, we understand there is a learning curve in buying blanks purely on descriptions vs handling them. We deal with this issue daily, please give our customer service people a call, and we'll help walk you through your next blank build.

Below is a video link to some great talk about blanks: (click on comment for additional info)

Hey Francis- in the past they were fast. I’d have a colored rod at my door within 2 weeks. The last time i ordered back in August it took a little over 5 weeks. That’s heard of a few guys having similar issues too.

Mudhole- I appreciate the response. I typically order all my parts through you guys and have built on MHX blanks too which were great. I’m not trying to put down CRB blanks, but give the OP an opinion about the actions and power of the blanks to come to a decision on which one would best suit the build

Is the IS601L too light for bass?

Here is some CCS data that Les Cline recently posted for the CRB IS661L
IS661L: IP = 340 grams; ERN = 13.4 (no AA listed)
I would guess an AA from 65-70.
I would also guess that the IS601L would be similar in power and action.

Depends on the size bass you're catching. It's probably fine for most, but as I stated in my earlier post. If you get the IS701ML, it'll be the only spinning rod you need for bass fishing. It can pretty much do it all from finesse fishing to jerkbaits and shallow to mid diving cranks. If you don't want a 7' rod, go for the IS661ML.

Daryl,

CCS data for the IS701ML: IP = 344 grams (137.6 pennies); ERN =13.4; (AA not specifically listed, but other blanks in this series show 61 and 64)

Not much difference. In that case, I might bump up to the "M" for my uses. I'll be able to give a real world assessment as soon as I can get to the water without freezing my knickers off. It's 30 degrees and we've been dealing with an ice storm the last couple of days. Brrr.

IS661M: IP= 402 grams (average of 7 blanks): ERN = 15.1; AA = 61

This is not the 701M, but I would guess it will be a more powerful blank.

My favorite spinning rod is an off the shelf (Lews). It'll be interesting to see if the IS701ML I'm getting ready to build is comparable my Lews. I'm sure hoping it is because that was the whole point. I want to build a rod that is pretty much the same, but allows me to tweak the grip area a bit to be more to my liking than the Lews. Of course, all I had to go off of from the Lews were the line and lure ratings and the power and action ratings. I'll know soon enough. lol

Look in the left hand column under sponsors. It's the first link. There will be a link for "more info", or something to that effect in there.
