I have about forty spools of various colored Gudebrod size A winding thread from days gone by. They have been stored in a plastic bag all these years, and when I went to take a look at them today, I found that ALL of the labels had sloughed off the ends of the spools, with the numbers identifying the colors by name loose in the bag. So of course I have no clue what label corresponds to the correct spool. I know it's not that big of a deal because my eyes can tell what color the thread is, but I'm still wondering if the information may be out there somewhere with the old Gudebrod numbers/colors.

Also...I am assuming that all those spools are threads that needed color preserver for the colors to remain true. All the thread I use these days is NCP, usually ProWrap color fast. Can I mix and match these threads if I use color preserver on them all, color fast or not? Will the color preserver alter the color of the color fast thread? I was hoping to use some of the threads needing color preserver as trim band or inlays. But I don't want to alter the color of the color fast thread with color preserver if that's what will happen.

It's easy to do some tests to prove to yourself what will happen. Much better than opiinions from a distance.

I use NCP 98% of the time and do not particularly care for CP, so there are certainly others more qualified to answer Ernie’s question. Even NCP changes color to some degree after the application of finish; I do not know whether or not CP would change the color of NCP. Michael offers sound advice = trust personal tests.

I only use NCP thread for trim wraps, I don’t like the looks of it as a main wrap. NCP thread just seems flat with no character or sparkle. I like the sparkle of regular thread and the way it darkens and becomes translucent when you apply epoxy. I also very rarely use color preserver, but that’s just my preference. For the same thread color option you get three different looks, NCP thread, regular thread with using color preserver, and regular thread not using color preserver.

I very much prefer the semi translucent look that one gets by using nylon thread with no NCP and or no CP.

None my fly rod buyers want the NCP look! I think that is because they also shy away from any look of bling. They much prefer the more organic look attained with nylon (no CP) then epoxy. They all say the colors really pop in sunlight.

Norm...About that translucent look with the use of regular thread and epoxy......I agree 100% that it looks great...at first. I built fly rods many years ago that I fished for tarpon with in the Keys, and after several seasons using some of the thread in question here (regular thread without using CP...just epoxy), the long hours on the bow of the boat in the intense sunlight resulted in the top sides of the wraps eventually cooking and fading (bleaching) pretty significantly. The undersides remained essentially unaffected, as they were protected from the sun. Although the rods performed beautifully, I was pretty unhappy with the look over time. Would the use of CP not have prevented that fade?

The sun is cruel, it fades and ages many things, including thread wraps. I’m not sure if NCP thread is immune to UV light, however the additives used to make NCP thread may help with UV resistance. I don’t think color preserver prevents fading. Thread dyes are all different chemical compounds, and some are more prone to fading then others. In other words, all colors don’t fade equally.
