Let me jog some memories. I was going through my rod building “catch all” draw and came across a container that has what appears to be a lump of glass like hard dried sap, amber in color about the size of a small biscuit.

I had a flash back and remembered what it was but I can’t remember what it was called.

It was tip adhesive which was used, I believe before hot melt was discovered. To use, you held it over a heat source until it became soft and gooey, you rubbed it on to the blank tip and quickly slipped on the tip top before it hardened.

I used this adhesive for quite a while, then I experimented with epoxy and decided I like the epoxy method better. Now my amber lump is now a conversation piece.

Anyone remember the name of this vintage adhesive?

Who made it?

Does anyone still use it?

Is it a type of "pitch" or pine resin? Some primitive archery folks use it to attach fletching to arrows.

I think you are on to something, I think it is some type of resin. I'll do some more searching.

I have a small lump of this stuff left from many years ago. Don’t remember where I got and don’t remember it’s name. I think it may have been called ferrule amber or something like that. It does jog my memory a bit, but my memory needs more than jogging.

in the 70's i used gudebrod's brown crayon sized stick, as well as a round stick of tannish/amber(color me colorblind) adhesive, about 3/4" in diameter. from my memory the larger adhesive broke down, into powder and chunks. i preferred the gudebrod. i cannot recall the maker, either.

Norman has it ..... we called it ferrule cement. When I was young and shooting competitive archery with my dad we made up our own arrows. We used it for attaching knocks, and inserts to accept target points or broad heads on arrows. But I can't for the life of me remember who made it. I just remember that it was hard, and had a dark amber color to it. It was wrapped in paper that you peeled back to expose it, and it took a whole lot more heat than tip top glue takes before it would melt.

It was strong as heck.

I wonder if it might be Rosin which melts at about 100-120 degrees. Used to use it in naval ship yards when they bent big pipe, maybe still. Melt it, poured into pipe, it cooled to a very hard substance where they could bend the pipe without collapsing. I melted it to combine with other stuff to make my own tree grafting wax.

The stuff my mentor used was called Ferr-L-Tite Cement. He kept a piece in his tackle satchel that went everywhere with him.

Looks like we would want to use the blue stick for our needs, looks like boiling water will release it, but you need a flame to set it originally.
