Taper Offset and Pattern Spacing

Hi all,

One thing I never understood and haven't seen any info about is how does the length of the pattern play into the taper offset distances the calculator spits out? By pattern I mean the length of the design that repeats. Say I have a pattern that's 18mm in length. Do I simply disregard this and go with the taper offset 0 and 180 calculated distances? I hope there's at least one person out there who can make sense of my question haha.

I apologize for asking a question when I know you want an answer but is pattern length a variable that can be entered into your calculator before it spits out offsets ?
Thanks.

Questions isn't clear. Are you using my book and VisualWrap?

Using an excel spreadsheet. I'd enter the following and it spits out the distances.

Length of Pattern
Base Circumference
Mid Circumference
Tip End Circumference
Repetitions

I'm brand new to wraps so this may be totally off base . From what I can read , the offsets mark points which will allow the relationships between the sides of the pattern to remain constant . I would guess that the number of equidistant offset points needed would be determined by the length of the wrap you wanted . Wouldn't the length of your wrap be determined by the length of the pattern and the number of those patterns used ( repetitions ) ? Like I said , inexperience and age bring on the mental fuzzies so this may be wrong or not relevant to your question ? I was hoping someone with more experience would comment so I could learn something too.

Think of each pattern as starting with a single cross positioned in the centre of each square that represents a repeat.
Your distances will be the distance between those initial crosses. It doesn’t matter how wide the pattern is, insofar as a repeat is defined by the size of the blank and the angle of the threads. A square pattern repeats at the size of the circumference of the rod. Of course the circumference changes down the rod, hence the need for TOS
