No Phil, I use the double haul effectively, and have for years, but there is no way it doubles my distance or anyone else's. I easily cast 40 feet. 80? No way. Not even close. Scores of fly casters? I don't believe that number either.

Get a better instructor? Get an honest one.

Ben, you're right. The double haul has two. Which is why it is called the "double haul." Maybe if I learn the triple haul I can get 80 feet.

My guess is you responders are poor students - or have poor instructors. I'm not very well-coordinated, two months away from my 80th birthday, and a 90' cast with a 8wt. line is no big deal. My experience is dang near anybody who can chew gum while clapping their hands can double-haul effectively - with instruction. One thing is absolutely certain: you can't buy fly casting proficiency, regardless of cost or the bench tests results of the rods you buy.
