I've come across some bad Gudebrod metalic thread.n doing long underwraps. It has 1/2 inch stripped spots about every couple feet. It gets worse the closer you get to the end. It's a real problem whIs there a better brand of size A metalic thread (1000 yd spools)?

Everybody and their brother is offering metallic thread. You just have to try a few brands and see if you can find something that suits you. It's a shame that the Gudebrod thread was bad, but not all of it is. You just got a bad spool.

In the meantime, nearly every sponsor listed on this site has a variety of metallic thread from different makers.

Take a look at the Sulky thread. www.sulky.com. They have alot of options and a couple of builders on this site have complimented its characteristics. I am placing an order soon. I have had much difficulty with Gudebrod's HT metallics. I do not like it's tendency to be so stiff and not lay down well. It tends to unravel when pulled tight. I will NOT use it any more since I have used the custom builders metallic thread from Clemens with much success and would highly reccomend it. I spoke with Bob recently from Custom Tackle too, he recommends their NU metallic threads, I have ordered some of it, but haven't used it yet.

what type of tension device are you using? if it puts pressure on the thread itself it can pull off the foil.

No, I know what he's talking about and it's not the tension device. I've had two spools that seem to have this striped appearance and they only happen in spots. When wrapped, it gives a textured, odd looking wrap, and then it goes back to the normal coloring. Definitely not representative of the brand, but a pain in the neck when it happens nonetheless.

I use a Clemens wrapper, so tension is not the issue because the Clemens unit places tension on the SPOOL not the thread. I usually don't use metallics in a tension device anyway. I only use metallics for inlays, so the tension is from my fingers as I rotate the rod. I have just never been able to get any of the HT metallics to work right.
