Did I read here that some people Sand the finish before putting on a second coat?

I have a few questions about this practise, if it does happen?

Why Sand?

What type of sand paper?

What Grit?

Does it work with Flex Coat?

Do not SAND take a Scotch Brite scuff pad gray in color and lightly scuff the finiish if it is over 48 hours old. you need to scuff it because the finish well not adhere to the old finish.

Robert and I do things differently. I use 400 or 600 grit wet/dry sand paper, whichever I happen to have on hand. I do it LIGHTLY. It will take most of the sheet because it loads up quickly.

If you are putting on more finish within 24 to 48 hours or so then there is no need to scuff or sand the previous finish. They will meld together into one coat.

Yup, no need to sand or scuff the finish if re-applying within 48 hours. However, make sure you have enough thickness of finish to sand. Otherwise, you may burn the threads as you hit the low spots while trying to level off the high spots. I usually apply 2 or 3 coats before sanding to level off bumps or waves. This gives me enough "meat" to sand off to achieve that level coat. Also, the additional 1 or 2 coats allows me to wetsand the finish instead of dry sanding. This slows down the sand paper from loading up and keeps the finish particles in the water and on the drop cloth as opposed to having finish dust particles floating all around.

Paul, I re-read your post. I try not to put 2 coats of finish on thread wraps. When I do, I rarely if ever that I can remember sand them first.

I was speaking of re-finishing blanks.
