How much better? Depends on the foot desgn and whether CP was used, I suppose. But I've had good luck with it and it takes only seconds to do, so I do it on all single foot guides.

Rod, reel, and line are an integrated unit. Spinsters should take into account the type of line they are using. its flexibility and perhaps the ambient temperature it will be used in. Using braid or monofilament, #10 or #30 test line, even ambient temperature air/water temperature should definitely be considered in selecting guides, even before size, brand name, or number of feet.

Interesting point . I had not considered air/water temperatures . In my younger days , I've fished in weather where I had to stir the rod tip in the lake to get rid of the ice in the guides so the line would pass . At my age , I may have the sense to avoid those situations - but I doubt it :)

What would be a good consideration for the winter vs the summer?

The only way ambient temp would affect anything but a fly line is if the temp gets to freezing. Then, larger guides will not ice up as much as smaller guides, like micros.
