Is this too thin?

Hey everyone,

Are the walls of my recessed hood on my cork ring too thin? This is a full wells grip that will be on an 8wt rod (if any of that matters) I didn’t intend on going that thin but I had some voids in the cork that were causing cracks to splinter off the ends of them in the hood so I just sanded it down a little further than originally planned. I actually like how it looks but didn’t want to run into issues down the line regarding cracking.

I've gone just as thin, when you get a good glue bond between all the pieces, the reel seat and cork all becomes one structure that can't go anywhere.

Alex,
Agreed that is pretty thin but, as Spencer mentioned, if the cork is bonded to the hood and seat properly, you should be good to go. In other words, it is worth the gamble running this grip rather than shaping and fitting another. Good luck., although “luck” may not be the most comforting of terms.

Just be really sure that the conk is epoxied to the reel seat hood for the entire circumference and it will be fine.

I agree with the above comments but will add that cork doesn't like to be in tension, so on a thin wall like this be sure there is not a press fit that will be stretching the cork circumferentially. In time it most likely will crack if under tension.

Your fit looks very nicely done.
