I will be building a CTS 6 weight Affinity X, four piece fly rod with a tip diameter of 1.7 mm. As I look at tip tops, I'm confused as to what tube size to order. Iwould prefer a Sake brand tip top, but am open to any quality brand. Thanks in advance. Tight Lies and frisky fish RJF Re: What Tiptop Size

The smallest tube size you could use without sanding the blank is a size 4.5 which equates to 1.78mm.(.070 inches)
Your tip at 1.7mm (.067 inches) will be a loose fit (.0015 inches per side). That looseness is not serious and can be managed. Re: What Tiptop Size

Robert,
Any time that I work with a rod tip that has a fine /thin tip that makes it difficult to find an appropriate tip top, I will simply do a thread wrap or wraps on the tip top of the rod blank to size the tip top to be a nice fit for the inside of the new tip top. I just make the tip top wrap and extension of the typical tip wrap that I do with all of my rods. I just to the wrapping of the tip before I apply the tip top - rather than after as is normally the case. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
