Joel,
Reconsider and be extremely careful in what you state!!! You obviously do not live in the south-west of the USA nore realize, understand and accept the severity of the unprecedented drought we have been experiencing for WELL over a decade now. This past season, the Sierra Nevada received less than 20% of its normal snowpack = MANY of the lakes will not receive enough runoff water to even make it to the bottom of the dams created to store and deliver water!!! The groundwater table (again unprecedented) within the LA area is almost 200ft below normal = many wells are as dry as popcorn flatulence. It would take over 20 consecutive years of extremely heavier than normal rainfall to begin to replenish it!!! Excuse my boldness, but YOU are the one that is “completely wrong”.

Thanks for the offer, Joel. I'll help too with my 4 stroke.

We are going to have to really run those engines, though. According to NASA groundwater storage of fresh water is diminishing due to human consumption, mostly irrigation.

There are oodles of photos of VERY low water levels in many western U.S. dams, and many U.S. citizens on the West Coast face strict water restrictions. We can ignore reality - but reality won't go away. Of all groups, anglers should first recognize the effects of dropping water levels in lakes, streams, and dams. Neither whistling in the dark nor silliness will alter reality.

Even science cannot agree on the water volume issue...

[www.ny1.com]-

"Water may change phases, but the amount always remains constant
By Ferdinand Furer Nationwide
PUBLISHED 11:00 AM ET Nov. 22, 2021
Did you know that the total amount of water on Earth is fixed? The amount of water is neither gained nor lost between the Earth and its atmosphere."

And if I believe that one, then there is this one:

[sciencenordic.com]

"The Earth has lost a quarter of its water
In its early history, the Earth's oceans contained significantly more water than they do today. A new study indicates that hydrogen from split water molecules has escaped into space.
Sybille Hildebrandt
tuesday 13. Mars 2012 - 06:28

Although water covers 70 percent of the Earth's surface, water is actually a rare substance that represents just 0.05 percent of the Earth's total mass.

Water has nevertheless played a crucial role in the emergence of life on Earth. Without water, the Earth would in all likelihood be a dead planet.

The amount of water on the planet has not always been the same..."

Hydrogen floats off into space

Rock samples were taken from the area and subsequently analysed in a laboratory at Stanford University in California, USA.

Tests revealed a significantly higher ratio of hydrogen to deuterium than is seen today.

Methanogenesis

In this two-stage process, water and carbon dioxide react to form methane, and subsequently hydrogen.

i) 2H2O (water) + CO2 (carbon dioxide) -> CH4 (methane) + 2O2 (oxygen)

ii) CH4 (methane) + 2O2 (oxygen) -> CO2 + O2 + 2H2 (hydrogen)

Net effect: 2H2O (water) -> O2 (oxygen) + 2H2 (hydrogen)

In the Earth's infancy, the hydrogen escaped into space. Methanogenesis also works when water contains the heavier isotope deuterium instead of hydrogen, but this process is significantly slower.

The explanation, according to Emily Pope, is that when the Earth was in its infancy, part of the water in the oceans was split into hydrogen, deuterium and oxygen via a process called methanogenesis. Both hydrogen and deuterium are low-density gases, so they rose through the atmosphere and eventually floated off into space.

Methanogenesis works more efficiently for hydrogen than for deuterium, so more hydrogen gas was created by this process than deuterium gas, and this slowly but surely altered the ratio of these isotopes in the oceans.

Knowing how much hydrogen had disappeared from the oceans over the last four billion years enabled the researchers to calculate that the oceans have lost about a quarter of their water since the Earth’s early days.

"Hydrogen and deuterium are still escaping into space, but very slowly, says Pope.

“Today the atmosphere is rich in oxygen, which reacts with both hydrogen and deuterium to recreate water, which falls back to the Earth's surface. So the vast bulk of the water on Earth is held in a closed system that prevents the planet from gradually drying out."

About that water crisis out west...

Florida might be able to sell our overly abundant water to western states and make a good income.

How many springs does Florida have? And where does all that water go daily? Pure, fresh, clean, clear spring water going to waste just flowing into the ocean daily some of which could be used and sold.

Lake Okeechobee is water source for a lot of South Florida drinking supply. That lake needs to be drained down. Florida is considering increasing the height and size of the dike to accommodate even more water. So as a Floridian I would sell Lake O water as fast as possible to western states. Florida is drilling deep wells into the ground now to pump excess water deep into the earth promising us it won't come back up. We don't believe them since it is only an opinion right now and only time will tell.

Florida is spending millions to get rid of water when we should be selling it for profit and send kick back checks to us citizens! I wish!

A little off road topic 4 wheeling never hurts!

But back on topic, it seems this forum is about split down the middle on this painted blank issue.

Whether or not a blank is painted has an infinitesimal effect upon a rod's fishing ability, but it galvanizes the obsessive rod builder.

I'm sure you have data to back up your statement. Right?

How is "lfishing ability" objectively measured? Same as "soul?"

Since nobody talks feet and inches in fly rod performance, whether in accuracy or distance, or tensile strength in pounds, or hoop strength in pounds, or rod harmonics, or any measured physical attribute besides length and weight, rod buyers have little useful data besides length, weight, and price when they go to purchase a rod. Personal opinions and vague promises have their place, but they are not a substitute for measured performance. Could it be that a rod's performance is unimportant to most fly-fishers when compared to the rod's pre$tige?

Sorry, Mark Talmo, it's you that is mistaken. The Great Lakes are as full as they've ever been. Florida too, as mentioned. Others, like northwest Ontario as well.

While I don't doubt your assertion that the areas you've mentioned are dry, it doesn't indicate a shortage of freshwater on Earth. It simply points to the fact that God didn't put it where you think he should. Things come around though, and there's always the opportunity to move to where the water is.

That aside, my post was very much tongue-in-cheek, and not of a serious nature; are you naturally immune to humor?

The issue is not the total amount of water on earth, it is access to the water that is on earth. There is no doubt that the US western and great plains aquifers are getting depleted. Much of Africa is hurting for fresh water. I've personally seen women in Afrrica washing clothes by hand in highway ditches.

But this has nothing to do with the original post question about the effect of finishing a blank.
