Hi everyone,

Those of you who make your fly grips on a separate mandrel, if you’re needing to do a recessed hood, do you prefer to recess before shaping or after shaping and why?

So far I’ve done both and I’m not sure which way I like better and was just trying to learn from anyone else’s experience.

I prefer do do it after turning on cork or eva, before on wood

I prefer to do it afterwards. The cork thickness around inlet is very thin and may crack while shaping. Secondly if the cork os slightly off center on the mandrel when starting, the inlet will be too.

Afterwords, it just makes sense if you are already turning grips on a mandrel. To me, the shape needs to be right before anything.

Afterward for both wood and cork.

What method do you guys use to inlet after shaping?

What method do you like to use to inlet after shaping?

What method do you like to use to inlet your cork grips?

I use a Forstner bit and Dremel tool with small sanding drum to touch up.

I use a Craftys Cutter to inlet cork, Forstner and dremel on wood or related

I do it before so that way it is exactly in the center after its turned. I have ran into several issues doing it after the fact.
