Are thread sizes the same throughout the manufacturers? Reason is I bought some Fugi thread and it seems thinner than Mudhole's Prowrap.

Thread sizes are close, but may not be exactly the same.

If in doubt, simply use a caliper to measure the thread size and you will know for sure.

As you can read from above, the standard thread sizes are .06, .08 and .10 For thread size a, b, and c respectively.

You are correct; Fuji size A is ~.003in while ProWrap size A is ~.004in. While it may be “only” .001in difference, that is 25% which is sizable. If all you are doing is making solid-color wraps, there is no problem. However, if you are inserting threads (adding and dropping threads) where they run side-by-side, using the SAME size thread will ultimately look better and will be easier to wrap. When run next to one another, the larger diameter thread will have a tendency to conceal the smaller thread as well as wanting to “climb” over the smaller thread. It can certainly be accomplished, but great attention is required. Save yourself the aggravation and time by using the same DIAMETER thread within the same wrap.

You can use different sizes/diameters of threads in the same wrap. I often use D metallic accent thread within an A wrap to increase the visual impact. After the epoxy wrap epoxy is applied there will be no discernable difference other than visual that matters.

Thank you for proving that I'm not insane. I was just doing a base wrap for a tiger with Fuji and Prowrap and EXACTLY what you are saying was happening lol.

In addition to using the same diameter thread, especially when wrapping a tiger with at least 3 different threads running side-by-side, it is imperative to have equal tension on all of them. Thread will flatten-out on the blank with more tension = wider yet less height.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. I dug out my thread to do some color testing and I had forgotten I had picked up some fun colors on closeout at my formerly local shop. They're mostly size D which was disappointing (does this matter for fly rods?) but then it became clear to the naked eye that there are 3 totally different size D. Fuji, prowrap, and a mystery brand. All 3 totally different sizes. But my first rod was done with size A fuji and lookign at it now 6 years later it's definitely more like hair than the one roll of PW I still have.

Does anyone find that finish/slickness between brands can be as tricky as diameter? I seem to remember the Fuji being more slick and glassy than the prowrap. I used a tiny 85 yard spool of gudebrod on my last build 5 years ago and it was different still but it was extremely old and a tiny bit sunburnt.
