I have one that I'm getting ready to use in a build, do I need to epoxy the insert to the reel seat and when dry epoxy both to the blank or do I epoxy them to the blank at the same time? Thanks, Mick

I haven't used that particular reel seat, but I use Alps MVT reel seats on my casting rods that also has an insert of that type. I epoxy the insert into the reel seat and let it dry before putting it on the blank. That way it's one less thing to worry about. moving.

I agree with David. Doing it that way makes the clean-up of epoxy that gets out easier than it is with the seat and insert on a long rod. Use care to keep epoxy out of the bore of the insert. And get all of it off while it's still fresh. After it hardens, it won't be possible to clean it up. Are you familiar with this item from the library? [www.rodbuilding.org]

No you don't, it is already glued in. I don't really trust pre-glued in inserts but there is small voids at each end where the insert is not quite as long as the reel seat tube, so I make sure to get epoxy on those areas also. If you don't have very much room for a foam arbor, I don't like masking tape, so I use fiberglass drywall tape cut in about 1/4" strips to use as thin arbors wrapped around the blank. One at each end and one in the middle. The epoxy at each end of reel seat tube should also seal it so there is no water intrusion.

If for some reason it is not already epoxied in, then by all means epoxy it in first wait for it to set and then epoxy on to blank. I have been using these for the last few years and have never had to epoxy one in.

The one I used on an eternity 8 wgt fly rod already had the insert glued in place, and I have had no problems with it.

Thanks guys! I got two at ICRBE for my first fly builds. The first one I do not remember the insert moving at all and that rod is done, fingers crossed!! Glued the second insert last night and will mount it to the blank tonight.

MIck, I mentioned the Alps MVT seats I use with a similar insert. I've used 7 of them total, I've had to epoxy inserts on 2 of them. I had the same concern you're having with the one you didn't epoxy, so I e mailed the place where I got them, and asked about it. They are closely related with Batson, and they contacted them. They said they are supposed to epoxied in at the factory. Evidently a couple got through.

The MVT is the type of seat that you order to fit the blank. I've had to ream the ones I've used to get them to fit exactly where I wanted them, and in reaming I never had a problem with the inserts slipping in the seat. The 2 I had to epoxy in, the inserts fell out of the seat when I took them out of the bag they had them in.

While I can't be positive about the ones you have, I feel pretty confident that if the ones I didn't have to epoxy in didn't slip in the seat while reaming, that they were epoxied in at the factory. Maybe that is a bit of piece of mind for you. Maybe not.

Hopefully it is.
