You can oversize anything and everything you want, but it would not be wise to use anything that is larger than what is actually required to do what you need the rod to do. Again, the best thing you can do is to tape on various set-ups and try them for yourself. You'd only have to acquire a small handful of extra guides in order to come up with several different set-ups and an hour or so spent test casting and comparing will put on the path to what will be best for your particular needs. ................. Also, keep in mind that one of the goals is to keep the line as close to the blank as possible, without it ever touching and to "funnel" the line into as straight a path as possible while not imposing too much fiction on the line. So too big of guides all the way down the rod would not obtain as straight of a flight path for the line. The straighter the line coming off the tip, the further it will go. (again, taking into account you are not choking the line so much that friction defeats the benefit) I hope this made sense, having an idea of "what" to accomplish help when you set up rods. Just as Tom said, it is the testing that will tell you, the theory may just help you accomplish it a little quicker. Elrod Re: Sage XP 996-4.
