forhan loops

It seems like years since I have seen a rod builder mention Forhan loops on a single-foot guide wrap. Has this precaution been discredited or are Forhan loops now so commonplace that they no longer need be mentioned?

The Forhan lock wraps come up on an almost monthly basis. Most of the time it is newer builders asking about the benefits or people debating their usefulness.

edit: Quick search shows it was talked about 8 weeks ago in a thread based around single foot fly guides.

Not sure of the frequency mentioned on this board, but I always us a Forhan Lock Wrap on my guides. Learned it here, like so many other techniques!

It comes up more often on other forums that have more newbies. Quick, free, insurance, not discredited at all. Some think it unecessary, but no one is arguing that it is a problem. Logic tells us that it cannot hurt, has to make the guides more stable. And according to Tom K tests have proven that it increases the force required to pull a guide off.

You can do your own test - wrap a guide with the Forhan wrap and try to pull it off. You'll need pliers, and it's not going to come to off unless you break the blank, the guide or the thread, or some combination of the three. Don't take my word for it - try it for yourself.

It's not a security wrap - it's a locking wrap and lock the guide to the blank indeed it does.

I learned about the locking wrap back in 2012 . Tried them on a spinning rodThey work so well , only trouble I had, was. I pulled the thread way to tight and had a time moving the guide a bit to get in line. I still use it on all of my single foot guides. There is a little trick I use before I tie them off with the Forhan loop
Tape the thread off check the line up move if you need to then tie off , works for me. Tom has it right on .
