Roger , you need to talk to your wife about shoes and purses, and why in spite of the fact that they all do basically the same job, like in catching fish with rods, one simply cannot get along without a lot of them. :-) Re: rod history

Method specific rods? Sure. Presentation specific rods? Certainly - trolling rod, worming rod. dry fly rod, deep jigging rod. Species-specific rod? Nah. Not until species-specific rods for, say, bluegills, or smallmouth bass, or burbot prove their superior ability to catch an individual species of fish. I fear the possibility that Madison Ave. advertising hacks will soon have naive anglers buying species-specific reels, species specific lines, and species specific bobbers to outwit their wiley prey. I've changed my mind on whether or not fishing rods are species specific. They most certainly are. They are specific to Earth's most abundant and widespread species of primates. Humans.
