If any of you follow the Jay Kumar's Bass Blaster online {link below) he is probably the most well know around Bass fishing leagues and knows sooooo many of the pros. Anyway, he recently had an article on his website that guy who must be a rather large custom builder (I think), In the article this person told Jay that LINE SIZE affects rod action??? He goes on farther to say that heaver line basically makes a medium rod perform like a medium heavy??? Now he is talking power not action, correct?
Granted I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer on the CCS but I know I lot of you are, like Norman Miller and others. Does line size change the action of a rod? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/28/2022 02:22PM by Tom Kirkman. Re: Line size and rod action

I'd say no. Re: Line size and rod action

I’d also say no. Power and action are physical characteristics of the blank itself. In short, with a horizontally held blank the CCS Intrinsic Power is defined as the amount of weight required to deflect a blank 1/3 its total length, and the CCS Action Angle is defined as the resultant tip angle of the blank when deflected by this weight.
I don’t see how changing line would change the either the power or action of a rod. Norm Re: Line size and rod action

Line size or type does not change rod action. Action is where the rod initially flexes. This is the definition provided by nearly all blank makers going back over 60 years now. I suspect he is referring to something other than "action" although I'm not sure what it would be. Speed is the only thing that weight on a rod is going to change, but the line isn't actually adding weight to the blank or at least not in any way that it would affect speed.

No it doesn't change the action, and it doesn't change the power, but when you are talking about braided line versus a nylon or fluorocarbon mono filament line, braided line will make a rod feel more powerful.
I was about to say that a lot of bass anglers confuse action and power, but that isn't true. I belong to several fishing related web sites. One of which is dominated by bass anglers. I often see things like medium action fast, or heavy action fast. The fast meaning fast action. The medium or heavy, meaning power. Rarely do I see anyone use the term, medium power, fast. They know the difference between the two, but they lump them together. I would say that is exactly what is going on with the article you mention. Re: Line size and rod action

I read the article, he simply said a low stretch line makes a MH rod act more like a H power rod, if I wasn't on this forum I would use some stronger language discribing my lack of surprise. Just where has this person been that he finally figured that out? Re: Line size and rod action

Line size doesn't even change the action of a fly rod, any more than sinker weight changes the action of a casting or spinning rod. Re: Line size and rod action

Ahhh ,,,,, I didn't read the article, as there was no link to it remaining in the initial post. Yeah, definitely nothing revolutionary there. Re: Line size and rod action
