I'm looking to build a 10-1/2 ft plugging rod for striped bass in the surf and thinking that NFC might have a suitable blank. At least 90% of the time it will be used for wooden pencil poppers, little necks, spooks, darters, and metal lip swimmers, 2 to 3-1/2 ounces. Casting distance is often important.
I'm hoping that someone having used one of NFC's salmon blanks for a surf rod can post their experience and perhaps a suggestion.

Some of the blanks that I've been thinking might have at least an outside chance of being suitable, but honestly these are little more than wild guesses on my part:
SA 1067 (IM)
SA 1066 (IM)
SA 1065 (SM)
SA 1064 (SM)

P.S.It doesn't help that the specs listed for these blanks in NFC's online catalog all differ from the specs listed on their order page.

I don't know about NFC - but CTS has a 10' and 11' that may fill the bill at 2-4 ounces.
They also have some special order blanks in 10'6". If interested, I will find out the lure ratings.
On your other topic re Salmon/Steelhead blanks - they are substantially lighter service blanks than surf blanks and may not stand up to Striper casting styles.

I use the 1064 for anything up to 2oz (poppers/lures/ or even a sand dollar style 2oz wt when fishing for surf perch)

The lure ratings listed on the Salmon Models are "trolling" - so the 2 to 8oz is a trolling weight, not a casting weight.

Here is what I have personally cast with those -

1064 - up tp 2oz (with some power reserve)
1065 - up to 3 oz (with some power reserve)
1066 up to 4 oz (with some power reserve)
1067 up to 5 oz (with some power reserve)

Can you let me know which specs you are seeing a difference on? The catalog should be the "final" word in terms of the specs.

Thanks Herb, my thoughts on salmon blanks for surf rods mirror you words.
But then I read Edge rods description of their BWC SAR 1065-2 and their FSC SAR 1065-2 salmon rods where they state, "... it also makes a nice surf rod if you need one more reason to buy it." This got me wondering if any of the NFC salmon blanks that I listed might be suitable for surf rods.

I'll have a look at the CTS blanks, right now I'm leaning toward Rodgeeks' blanks.

There is realky nothing in the salmon fishing world that resembles anything you are t rying to do, NFC and Edge Rods do have surf rods in their arsenal, musky anglers pull Suicks and other plugs and you have some active surf forums to go to that might be able to help.

SA 1064 (SM) catalog p28- butt 0.558 ____ tip 5.5 ___ wt. 3.9 oz
....................... order page - butt 0.58 ____ tip 5.1 ___ wt. 4.27 oz

SA 1065 (SM) catalog p28- butt .650 ____ tip 5.5 ____ wt. 4.0 oz
.........................order page- butt 0.64 ___ tip 4.9 ____ wt. 4.34 oz
There are similar discrepancies for the (IM) versions of the above 2 blanks. I haven't checked the (HM) versions.

I can't find these next two blanks in the catalog. I've copied the specs from the order page.
SA 1066 (IM)- butt 0.07 (I'm sure a misprint)____tip 4.8 ____wt. 3.85 oz

SA 1067 (IM)- butt NULL ___tip NULL ___ wt. 3.85 oz I don't know how big or small "NULL" is. And maybe it's just me, but 3.85 oz seems awfully light for a 10-1/2 ft. rod that I intend to hang up to 4 ounces on and swing for the fence. However Aleks, I will defer to your stated first hand experience with these blanks and take the opportunity to thank you for your feedback.

Thanks, the click-able feature is quite convenient. Note to other readers- I don't think it works with all browsers, I had to switch from Brave to Safari. edit- I just tried it again on my Brave browser and it worked.

Agreed Spencer, this has always been my opinion too. But I just reminded myself that in the past, only on rare occasion mind you (chuckle), I have been known to be wrong.

I'm happy to say that I'm familiar with NFC's surf rods. I've built their SUR1165 and their SUR1167 and am quite pleased with both.

The site I checked, for the most part, seems all giddy over ODM and Black Hole.

I'd see if I could locate a Lamiglas before they are gone for good.

Lami has the blanks for Carbon surf for sale.....good luck finding anything else.

Someone is bound to have something laying around. I know Rod Room has some but they are all one piece. So you have to buy in person or pay high shipping costs. Lamiglas just seems to have the right action and power for the striper surf fishing crowd.

Century and Suzuki would be some others to consider.

I was up at Lami over the summer...seems they too have 1 piece rods left...they just don't advertise them. But they were so short staffed and out of finis material, that they couldn't make blanks for sale. I have the Suzuki Special 10 ft. Good rod for stuff under 2 ounces.
