winding checks ideas

I'm building an ultra light rod with carbon fiber grips and I'm having a creative block on winding check ideas. The Fuji metal winding checks I planned on using leaves too large of a gap between the outside diameter of the winding check and the outside diameter of the carbon grip making it look too "empty".

I'm not sure getting a larger was being check would work since it would sit too high off of the blank. I'm not opposed to using rubber or silicone checks but I'd rather not though. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

The rubber or silicone work well with the CF grips. You also can make a ramp using paste epoxy that can be colored

Do you color it using epoxy marbling dye?

Check out the Matagi HTWC-L checks. Voodoo rods sells them. They have a 20mm O.D. but are still rather low profile.

Voodoos selection starts at 10mm which is way bigger than I could use. The largest I.D. I need is 7mm. I'll see if those are available elsewhere in smaller sizes

Just make up the difference with dyed black epoxy. If you need a 7mm and use a 10mm you will only have a 1.5mm gap between the blank and check. Use one thin masking tape bushing to center the check on the blank then fill with epoxy.

yes, the marbling color works well.

I wanted to avoid lifting the check off of the blank if all possible

Keep in mind you want a bit of a gap with the aluminum checks. Since they won't flex with the rod you don't want a tight fit on the blank.

The winding checks used for fly rods are much smaller in ID, down to less than 4 mm.
