Applying Thread Finish on Vertical Face of Grip?

Trying to figure out how best to apply finish the vertical face of of a carbon fiber grip. Here are the details. I am trying to use a aluminum winding check. This particular grip has a rather aggressive texture to the weave, red and black forecast. The check does not sit very well. It looks centered but it is sitting on high spots and a noticeable gap can be seen in the low spots. More than a acceptable glue line type of gap. So I am thinking of just spot gluing the check on then apply finish around the outside to fill the gap. Figure if I bring the finish all the way out to the edge of the grip the unevenness of the gap under the check won't be as noticeable. Can this be done in thin coats or is the finish just going to want to flow onto the check?

Or is there a way to knock down the high spots to get the check to sit flatter? Never tried to sand down carbon fiber, afraid it might explode into tons of tiny fibers that will cause me more problems.

Fill the gaps at the top of that foregrip with Rod Bond mixed with black pigment - let dry and sand flush

Well that makes it too simple. Thanks
