I have never seen crumbly foam.
CFX brand arbors are the lightest I have measure, thenn the gray “graphite foam” then the flex coat white arbors. I do not know what density they correspond to other than that CFX has claimed 3 lb foam with the strength/density of 6 lb foam (I think I saw this on Mudhole). "I have never seen crumbly foam."
Polyurethane foam arbors are fragile/brittle when thin. And the thin sections might be characterized as being crumbly. But add epoxy and they become very strong, especially in compression which is the type of loading that reel seat arbors see. Re: Need most rigid, lightest, thin arbors....

Mo,
Good luck on your quest for the perfect, lightest rod for you and your needs. May you be successful in what ever method you use to achieve that goal. Be safe Re: Need most rigid, lightest, thin arbors....

If you are working with such a small clearance I do not see how a couple or three layers of masking tape would hurt anything or not be good enough. I would not use masking tape to make large arbors but this amount seems so tiny that the epoxy is going to be adhering to the seat all along the length. I would use tape in this instance and have done it over the years with no problems. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
