Batson IP904 Blank
Posted by: Jon Gold (---)

I found a Batson IP904 blank, 7'6", 1 piece, 8-17 lb. in the back of my pile. I cannot remember what I bought it for.
The Batson catalogue says it is an RX7, Multi-Purpose, Inshore/Popping blank. What can it be used for? Suggestions?
I live on the Oregon Coast now, so maybe location specific.
Thanks

Jon,
That is really a terrific blank.

With the note about the Popping rod - it generally means that the tip is relatively soft and remains soft well back down the blank - giving what is normally referred to a moderate action rod blank.

The typical popping rod used for surf fishing can be fished very well pitching Live Shrimp for some of the off shore big fish found along the banks of Oceans.

But that same moderate action really indicates that the rod is a wonderful crank bait rod - because with this slower action, the bite is easy to see, and a hooked fish tends to stay hooked up very well.

Take care

From another source:
"The Popping Rod series was originally designed to cast live shrimp under a popping cork for saltwater flats species like seatrout and redfish. As anglers will, they quickly discovered these rods worked exceptionally for fishing soft plastics and small jigs for bonefish, small snook and other flats regulars."

I throw spinners, maglips/wiggle warts and spoons to salmon with mine in coastal streams, but I have the 8 ft version, see no reason why your blank wouldn't work. Some have extended them to the 9 ft range for the same uses. Will work in the bubble salmon fisheries in the Columbia above Bonneville Dam from shore or boat. Trolled for summer steelhead using spinners and Timber Tiger cranks at Wind River maybe 20 years ago with crankbait and popping rods this power, one of my best memories of the Wind. A 12 fish day.
