Re-coloring an old plastic tackle box

Has any had any experience in re-coloring a plastic tackle box they wouldn't mind sharing? I have an older one I've acquired that's pretty faded and was thinking of trying to dye the color in rather than paint it but have not tried either and was hoping for some experienced opinions on the matter. It by the way is one of the fold out shelf/tray style ones... Thank you.

Robert,
I find that the best method to recolor a plastic tackle box that is 100% effective.

Remove the contents of the box.

Go out to the garbage can and toss it in.

Go to the store of your choice and purchase a new one that meets your needs.

I have never ever found a suitable method to recolor plastic.

Best wishes

The plastic will not accept dye. You would have to paint it and paint does not want to stick to that sort of plastic. You could use the spray version of plasti-dip but even that is not going to be permanent.

If it is the fading that is bothering you just take a propane torch and hold the flame about an inch from the box surface and work it along the length of the box, then down and back and repeat until you have done the whole box. The color will come back to like new. Just be careful because applying too much heat too close can cause melting of the box. You just want it heated to the point that the plastic barely glosses over.

Robert,
Most plastics inherently repeal most adhesives, paints and dyes. The original color of your box is within the plastic mixture itself used to make the box. I doubt there is a suitable material or method to re-color it.
While Ben and Mike were certainly trying to help you, I suggest following Roger’s recommendation.

Rit dye.... works on chainsaws so it should work on a tackle box

I’ll second Rit dye. I’ve used powdered Rit mixed with denatured alcohol to dye plastic arrow nocks. First time I’ve outed that. I used to make custom wood arrows for traditional archers and it drove people nuts on how I had nocks in colors that were unavailable. Doesn’t work with all plastics so test first.

Krylon offers their Fusion paint. Sticks great to all types of plastics with no special surface prep.

You can try Hydrogen Peroxide and UV light.
It will act as an oxidizing agent.
The beauty salon places will have a stronger version of H2O2.
Google a white paper called "retrObright".
