Ok, I saw a thread that showed a 4wt switch using a 4wt wf line. I am confused??? I thought a 4wt switch rod would need a 7wt wfsingle handed line? Am I wrong in that thinking? I have a North Fork 7 wt Switch and I am using a 10 wt wf single handed line on that. Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

I have not seen a 4wt SWITCH rod! There are many long light weight rods being used for Euro nymphing, but they are not SWITCH rods. Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

You're trying to compare spey to single hand lines I think, a 4 wt spey will also be a wf line, the grainage and taper however will be dramatically different. A switch rod is simply a short spey rod. Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

There are several manufacturors (Including Sage) selling blanks and finished rods called Trout Spey rods. They are the length of a typical switch rod and range in weights from 2 through 5, and yes, you need to use a higher-rated line in order to load the rod for proper casting. Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

A rod designed as a true "Switch Rod" has a unique action. It is not just a long rod.
That being said - there are some bastardized long rods being marketed as Switch rods. Any switch rod - properly designed as a Switch rod - or not - may be rated for single-handed or Spey lines. The manufacture of sales person should be able to tell you. Herb CTS Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

So as Richard stated, the blank I have is a North Fork LMX FASW1107-4 Fly, Switch. It is 132inch. I put a 10wff on it for single handed and it seems to be perfect. I also have a RIO 500gr 2 handed for nymphing. Do you see any issues with this? So if a blank is showing as a 4wt 2 handed, would it not take a 7wt single handed? Edited 1 time(s). Mark,
The grain window for any rod is highly subjective. If it works for you - then it's right. Herb Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

Best line selection will be harder than any WF line. Also I didn't know NFC built a switch blank that light. Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

I think you are referring to 4 wt, then, no they don't. But a 7wt is pretty standard. I am looking for a 4wt switch though. We have a good Steelhead run here and I was hopping for a 7wt single handed rod that is LOOONGGG. lol Any ideas? Re: SWITCH ROD WT.

mark,
A #4 "proper" Switch blank is pretty light. Maybe ok for panfish if you can even find lines for it. i built a 10'6" #6 Switch rod on a CTS blank designed for Switch casting. I think I used a #8 WF line to Over Head Cast it. An option is the Med-Fast Affinity-MX at 11'0' in a #3 A better option would be the Moderate actioned Affinity-M at 11'0" #3 Another option is a very light Spey blank: Affinity DQ - 11'0" #2/3 Email me if further info and/or pricing wanted.
