Marbling on top of base wrap

When I've done marbling in the past, I usually choose colors that are already present (either in the wraps or the blank itself).
I was taught to put down an base layer of colored epoxy (I usually do black), and while it is still wet...add drops of other colors in, and then use a pick to pull the colors into patterns, etc.

The rod I'm building has base wraps of sea-foam green that I want present in the marbled section
I'm wondering if the following would work for a decorative marbled butt section.

Instead of putting down a layer of colored epoxy as the base...put down a base wrap of the seafoam green thread for the entire section I intend to use.
Then cover it with clear epoxy and (while it is still wet) add colors, pick/pull etc.

So the marbling colors would spread through the clear epoxy and the sea-foam thread would show through from between.

Anyone try something similar?

Tops? Advice? Warnings?

Thanks,

-Dan-

Sounds like you're right on track, go easy on adding the colors, you can't get them back!

Hello Daniel.

Lynn is right, this is one I did the same way as you describe only I used white thread.

Lynn is also right about not going overboard with the colors (you could loose your sea-foam).

Daniel - What you describe is the best way to get a nice, clean marbled area - main color thread base w/marbled accent colors. Lynn & Robert are spot on with the advice of not using to much pigmented epoxy on the 1st pass - you can add but not fun to remove.

I did the same thing the other day. I laid down white thread and then pearl epoxy, then the guides and final epoxy. Turned out pretty good. I only did it so the blank wouldn't show through though.
