No they do not create energy, but they can store and release energy that has been imparted to them.

Exactly. And rods can pull but not push lines. As long as the rod is bent backwards during the cast the rod is pulling the line faster and faster. As soon as the caster takes his/her thumb or finger off the line - which happens BEFORE the rod unbends - the line flows freely through the guides, but it does not Push the sinker, lure, or fly. As soon as your finger releases your line the stored energy in your rod can no longer pull OR push your sinker, lure, or fly because your line is limp, sliding freely through your guides. You can't push on a rope.
