Hi Rod Builders,
I’m exploring Stillwater fly fishing for trout and it’s been suggested a 10’6 wt. fly rod is a great tool. I would like to build one but, am not sure on a inexpensive to mid price fly rod blank with a medium-fast action. Your suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks, Leo Re: 10’ 6 at. Fly Rod

MHX blanks cast nicely and are quite durable. Matched with the right line an MHX blank will perform as well as blanks costing 2X or 3X or even 4X as much. Accuracy? Riflemen are tickled when their rifle shoots tight groups - it's up to the shooter to adjust his aim on target. Same deal with fly rods. The great majority of rod blanks are made overseas, shipped in bulk, and re-branded. If it doesn't say "Made in the U.S.A. on the blank - it wasn't, but it was marked up here. Re: 10’ 6 at. Fly Rod

I built a 10 ft. 6 wt. rod for that years ago, lost more fish wish that rod than any other I have ever fished. One of the guys on the lake with me showed me his rod, which had a much softer tip than mine, had no problem catching trout on that one so I build a 9 ft. rod on his blank, it was a Diamongback VSR blank built for stillwater, it was a copy of the Fisher/ Kennedy blanks, later I found the Lamiglas Perigee 9 ft. 5/6 also fit the bill. All my stillwater rods are 9 ft. and I have seen many of the boat anglers using 7 1/2 ft. rods. My 9 ft. rods work fine from float tube, raft, or boat. Last note, if you're fishing down into the chronomid size flys, you really need to watch your tip power, Kamloops trout sized fish and stiff tips don't work well together. Re: 10’ 6 at. Fly Rod

I agree with Spencer.
A 10' #6 rod is not necessary and can be a bear to cast. Herb Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
