Weird issue - Gudebrod Electra Royal Blue

**Follow-up:
I tried Roger's suggestion and found the issue was related to one specific spool of thread. It is apparently defective.
Thanks Roger for the suggestion

I put down some under wraps using Gudebrod Electra Metallic Royal Blue (#9245).
As I gave them a coat of color preserver, I noticed as I dipped the brush that it was leaving a slight blue stain in the cup.

This morning, when I looked at the wraps...while they still are blue metallic, their significantly "less blue" than the thread on the spool. It still looks nice, but my OCD is definitely being triggered. :)
I've made several rods over the years with the same thread, same technique, and same colors but I've have never seen this before.

I'm curious if any of you have seen this before.

Did I do something wrong?

NO

You could try an experiment -

Take 10 different pieces of metallic thread from different spools. Then, do an inch wrap on a dowel or junked rod blank.

Then, using 10 new brushes - take a dip of cp, and coat each of the wraps with cp - leaving each of the new brushes by the piece of material just wrapped.

Since you are always stating with a new brush, you will not contaminate your cp supply.

Fine out if any of the spools of thread have the same issue.

If you use 5 cent throw away brushes, cost will not be a factor.

Let us all know what you find.

Best wishes.

Gudebrod metallic blues also fade very quickly in the sun from my experience.

I use metallic embroidery thread to improve my chances of a good result. I think blue fading has been mentioned before. My early 1990's GLX 6 weight hasn't had a problem, but it's either fishing, or in it's tube, it has a single blue thread in the middle of the wrap.

He’s not talking about it fading - but rather the color coming off when applying CP

Daniel,
Now that you have found one spool of thread that is defective, I trust that - that particular spool of thread has found its way to the garbage can??????????????

If you don't throw it away the thread will eventually end up on another rod, giving you the same trouble.

Over the years, Have had 3 or 4 spools of thread that were essentially frizzing. i.e. when the thread was pulled tight, it would partially uncurl a bit and form frizzies on the surface that really don't become evident until the first coat of finish is applied.

But, after running across the first one several years ago, and then following up with a test wrap to verify that it was the thread and then stripping off about 25 feet of thread to try another section of thread and found the same issue - the spool was summarily deposited in the trash can.

Hi Roger:

No worries...that spool is history.

Truthfully, I'm happy it was just one defective items. I love that color, and a Gudebrod is no longer around, what I have now is it.
Thanks again.

Cheers!

When Gudebrod went out of business the first time several years ago, a group oif employees bought the rod-building thread part of the business (I don't know the details) and began again producing thread. I found quality control issues with the thread produced after the restart, with metallic and untreated thread. I suspect your Electra was produced after the restart...
