I'm wanting to learn how to do marbling and all the videos I've watched recommend you start by experimenting on rod blank scraps.
Anyone have suggestions where I can find some scrap pieces to experiment on? I thought about going to some thrift stores and buying some old beat up sticks and just cutting them up. Seams a waste though. I'm wondering if I was to buy some wooden dowels at home depot if that would work. Advice anyone? Re: Scrap Rod Blank PIeces

It is possible to do it on wood dowels but you may want to seal the dowel surface first. Wood will soak up a lot of paint, finish, etc., which a rod blank will not. Therefore to best approximate how things will work on a rod blank, it is better to use sections of rods. Flea markets are good sources as well.

Check the @#$%& site and search for "Jumbo Extra Wide Smoothie Straws Milkshake, Boba Assorted Colors Straws 150 Pack" 150 pieces for $9.99.
They are 8 1/2 inches long 0.40 inches in dia. You also can search on plastic tubing. Good luck Re: Scrap Rod Blank PIeces

Go to a local fishing tackle shop and ask if they have any broken rods they want to get rid of. Some will give you broken rods. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

I have gone to my local Dicks Sporting Goods before and asked them if they had any scrap golf club shafts they were throwing away. They replace the shafts all the time for customers and just throw them away. Those should work for you and they work well for other misc. repairs too.

Go to a fishing store and look in the charity rod box. If there are any rod blanks in there that look worth while for your project ask the manager for permission to remove the ones you wish to have from the charity box for educational purposes. Re: Scrap Rod Blank PIeces

Hello Daniel.
Trash cans on piers, around boat ramps, behind sports stores, anywhere people fish that has trash cans, when they break them they throw them away. Tight Wraps & Tighter Lines. Bob, New Bern, NC. Re: Scrap Rod Blank PIeces

Like mentioned above, wooden dowels work great! Spray paint first with black, white or any other color you may be using for blank colors. Experiment with coverage, color combinations and allowing the epoxy to “setup” a bit before applying. All these, including adding heat, will produce different affects. Also, Testors vs powder pigment. Dowels are easy, cheap and work great IMHO.
