Hi all
I was about to lay out the guide spacing on the first 3 sections put together. I noticed the cts is about 1 inch longer than my other 9ft blanks for the same sections is that something I need to worry about? It is my first fly rod build. I was going to use the sage x 9ft 4wt spacing listed on the sage website .. any advice is greatly appreciated Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?

1" inch longer overall or 1" longer over the first three sections? The ferrule overlap may be different and the final length with all 4 sections may be exactly 9 feet. Or is this a 3-piece blank.
An inch isn't going to change much in terms of guide spacing. I'd set up the spacing on my own but the Sage chart is okay as a starting point. .................. Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?

Thanks for the reply…. It is only for the first 3 sections of a 4 piece when I get back home I will measure each section Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?

This is how mine is worked out. 5, 9-1/2, 14-3/16, 19-1/8, 24-7/8, 30-3/4, 38-13/16, 47-3/4, 56-13/16 an 66-5/16. The stripper is 30inches from the but. you can use this as a starting point but make sure you do a static test.

Don't measure each section - measure the total length of the assembled rod. Ferrule overlaps can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer leading you to believe that your rod is longer than it may be once assembled.

CTS has a habit of making their fly blanks slightly longer than spec.
Don't rely on "book guide spacing". Perform a static test. This will guarantee that your guides on the ferrules will be correct. Herb Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?

Off topic - slightly.
To get the maximum performance from a fly rod - it must be built light. In order to build as light as possible I recommend that CTS blanks be outfitted with REC Recoils. Take a look at this video by Paul Arden of Sexyloops. Paul mentions REC Recoils at minute 5:00. If you are not familiar with Paul Arden - he is arguably one of the world's best fly casters and instructors. Herb Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?

First off, you all are fantastic thank you for the information. I put it all together and measured out to be about 1/4 inch longer than 9ft. Never accounted for the ferrules over lap.. I am definitely doing a static test before epoxy just wanted a starting point.
As for guides I went with snake brand snake guides From the tip top the first 4 are 1/0 light wire 5 and 6 are sz 1 light wire guides 7-10 are sz 1,2 ,4 and 12 for the striper guide However will look into the REC guides that Herb mentioned. Re: Cts affinity x 4wt build ?
