So I took a Lamiglas walleye closer and stripped it down to the blank-everything off it, lightly wet sanded the blank down using 600 down to 2500 sand paper to remove any noticeable marks where the guides were. Blank looks really good. My question is, can I leave the blank the way it is and start the build or do I have to put a coat of Permagloss or similar on it?

Great. Thank you for the responses. I’m still not sure what I want to do but it’s nice to know I don’t have to put anything on it. I do like a gloss rod though for some reason.

If you want a gloss rod for some reason, build the rod as the blank is right now.

Then about 2 weeks after the rod is finished to insure that the thread finish is 100% cured, use auto wax, to wax the blank and then hand polish it. It will have a nice shine with very little weight increase.

If you want a little sheen, then Permagloss, if not, go as is. Wiping on Permagloss is quick and easy, and gives a very hard and durable finish that weighs next to nothing. Basically your choice.
