What do you think about EPDM and how has it worked out on your rods? It is relatively new to me because I mostly use natural cork or other variations of cork and EVA. I know it came about as a replacement to Hypalon, but I never used it either. How has the material held up on the rods you have made, UV effects?. Are there any special techniques to shaping or gluing? I am considering to use as a foregrip for a near shore rod. Would this be a good application?
Thanks, Lance Re: Hypalon / EPDM

I have never used them.
In general they are considered more durable, a little softer, but are a heavier. Best used for a rear grip on a heavy power rod that will spend time in a rod holder. I'm more inclined to go with a slick butt for that usage. I don't think a foregrip on a near shore rod would be a good application. I wouldn't want the extra weight, especially forward of the reel seat. These days I'd go with carbon skin over foam core. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Hypalon / EPDM

I just built a rod with an EPDM grip. Russell is absolutely correct in they are softer and heavier. I went with a triangular EVA fore grip to save weight in front of the reel seat. I am not sure the amount of savings is noticeable, however. The EPDM really didn’t feel all that heavy to me. The combination of texture and the increased cushion afford a very secure grip. Installation is beyond easy as the material has enough stretch to avoid reaming if ordered a little undersized. The mix of EVA and EPDM on a rod looks perfectly fine to my eyes. Re: Hypalon / EPDM

I am going with an AT G2 16" SW Carbon handle kit, cut down to 14" for the rear grip and a 12" EPDM foregrip. I was really worried about how EPDM holds up in UV light and how tuff it is and it sounds like it will be fine. The length and the weight of the rear grip should balance the rod nicely.
