Centering cross points?

I can't seem to get my cross points on my butt wraps centered on my real seat. When I'm half way through I look down the blank and it's always off to the side. What is the trick?

Its all about layout. Read Clemens' books.

Pics from about 1978 when I was using a home built rod lathe.

I am sure there is a good article or two here on the site, do some searching.

The dental floss taped on the hand rest is marked with the spacing, then 4 equally marked are each taped at 90 degree intervals on the rod. After all the wraps are complete, the dental floss is pulled out. Why dental floss? Low stretch, try different brands, some is stretchier than others. And it is flat, takes a mark well from a ball point pen.

The points cross on the tight dental floss, easy to keep the points in line.

Simple wraps made when I was learning.

Look close and you can see a strand of dental floss, with the layout distances, pulled tight across the blue under wrap. There are 4 such strands around the rod. Note the degree markings at the hosel.

The white 3x5 card has the layout details. Sorry about the glare, the photos were digitally copied from Kodachrome slides. No digital cameras way back then! Note the layout on the masking tape on the hand rest.

My wraps tend to run off a bit due to me being right handed....I tend to push them a bit to the left of center while packing. That is just me though.

The 4 lengths of dental floss really help. Just get them straight on the under wrap!

Yep. Go back to the basics (In this case Clemens Books) and it works.

Try floss, it marks easy and is easy to pull out once the wraps are complete.
