Yep! That's me. Won't build a rod without it! But I must admit I was doing pretty good finding it without one.

I don't have one and I have zero plans on ever building one.

Kent, I check one now and then out of curiosity (Tom would ask why, lol) and I agree on not needing it. There's plenty stuff I do need.

Lynn, Kent and chris,
You are all stirring the pot of the spine VS straightest axis stew which will never be completely cooked!!! Lol

FISHING IS NOT AN ESCAPE FROM LIFE BUT RATHER A DEEPER IMMERSION INTO IT!!! BUILDING YOUR OWN SIMPLY ENHANCES THE EXPERIENCE.

Yep! But rest assured there is a new way on the horizon... and it brings with it a new term for us custom rod builders, and a new device for uncovering it. I am reading up on it right now. It is called the "tracking axis" of a blank and may throw out everything we thought we knew...

You guys saying you don't put a foam core in and lay your rods in the pool then spin them to see what side points up? lol

Aaron

That is fantastic. That should get pot stirred up, in the mean time I'm going fishing.

"Tracking Axis" isn't new - been around in some marketing phrase or another for at least 25 years. And like "spine" is just a theory that sounds good but has no data to back it up.

I hear it may very well reach publication soon.

The "Keyhole" blanks, which were said to ensure "Aligned Tracking" also made it to publication, and even managed to build and sell some blanks for about a year. They did not outperform standard full tubular blanks, however, and thus have relegated to rod building history. I believe I still have their brochure in my files somewhere.

By golly, I do...

"The Whipp Rod is a revolutionary concept. The secret of these rods is the unique, patented, cross section which, being in the shape of a flattened circle, allows the rod to track precisely along a specific axis which means a rod with much improved directional stability."

And the rod certainly did what it advertised. The trouble was, standard full tubular round blanks don't have "directional stability" problems. The Whipp Rod was another attempt to solve a problem that didn't exist to begin with. What a rod does in a spine finder or when flexed by hand simply doesn't approximate what it does when flexed by a fish (or casting weight) pulling on a line running through the guides.

This is why the best method is to magnetize a needle and balance it on the rod tip. This magnetized needle will interact with the carbon and point to the blanks inherent "True North" thus aligning the rod in perfect balance with nature.

Sorry. Had to. Last one I promise.

Be careful - you have every bit as much proof for that method as does rod spine. A year from now you'll see somebody touting it as the best way to orient your rod blanks.

I am holding out for the release of the illuminated, motorized version of the spine finder. It will supplement my rod harmonics detector.

Let me throw out some humor... my dry sarcastic humor that is...

Maybe one day there will actually be a custom rod built for pure performance! Nah. It would not be pretty enough! More art! We need another decal thread! Pour on the epoxy all over the place and double those threads up and run them up and down the blank! How about another MW guide thread! Another simple spiral thread! How about another how great products are from China thread and sell them as assembled in America?

The magnetic to true north harmonics detector actually works best! I saw one on alibaba today as well! This one was called the humdinger!

Directions: Toss magnet in humdinger and stand rod in humdinger from either end as it does not matter, and swish it around any old which a way. Where ever it stops build on the side closest to magnet. Works especially well on multi-sectional fly rods as a bonus! Casting accuracy and greatest dead lifting capacity guaranteed or your money back!

It is obviously the best way to build a custom rod! A new version of spin the bottle!

Point of comment... seems today the not so debatable "best" way to build a custom rod is based on no science at all. Sort of like how we humans run the world.

I try and keep an open mind as hard as that may be! At least spin the bottle worked!

Dam that speed coffee from Central America! Worse than crack I tell ya.

(Hope this put a smile on at least one face out there!)
