I do not want to make any but the most simple of my tools. I make high quality rods to sell and the last thing I want to do is try and do this with tools that have been made by someone like me, who knows nothing about making those tools, after reading a few instructions and maybe watching a video or two.


Thanks in advance for any advice on where to source equipment/tools best for bamboo rod making. I am reading through this forum and others but so much of what I find is 15-20 years old.

A very good resource for you is the Classic Fly Rod Forum (www.classicflyrodforum.com). It's a group that's dedicated to all aspects of making, fishing, collecting and restoring bamboo rods. The best makers in the country are there and will be able to give you the guidance you need to get started.

Some things you may just have to make like your binder
When it planes the standard go to is a vintage Stanley 91/2. However, you will want to upgrade the blade. I did that for several years then upgraded to a Veritas with PM 11 blade. The other good plane is the Lie-Neilsen with the groove. Yes they are pricey but remember. Buy once,cry once.
