Removing epoxy stains from a blank

By a mistake there has been left small spots of epoxy on the blank. The stains are ultra thin and applied by indirect exposure.

Is there a good way to remove such stains, wth heat or perhaps sanding?

It is a surf-rod blank, and is matte charcoal (RS SU1264F).

If sanding is an option, what grade?

A little heat from an embossing gun, candle, or lighter for a very few seconds to the spots while moving the blank to avoid heat build up will loosen the bond allowing removal by rubbing with a paper towel or cloth.

DO NOT SAND - even 2500 grit will make it worse.
If the DNA doesn't work - try Acetone - but lightly.
Best it you do it sooner than later after finishing.

I have used a heat gun on low and only a few seconds and don't hold the gun too close to the area. After warming up the area with the gun I use a wash cloth that is textured and rub the area like polishing. In my experience, the finish has rubbed off like semi wet glue. NOT TOO MUCH HEAT.

Use just enough heat to soften the epoxy enough to remove it without removing anything else

I have had good luck with using a pencil eraser. Seems like to creates a pit of heat and is slightly abrasive. Rub the spot then wipe the eraser residue off with DNA.

I took the apporach of trying the least drastic method first - the eraser.
It actually works! By using the eraser intensively, the stains do really disappear. This seems to generate just as much heat as needed.

Just a note to this technique. I have always done it within about 48 hours of finishing. Don't know how well it may work on well cured finish.

In my case, the epoxy finish was like 3 or 4 days old and well cured.
The layer was very thin, which must have been an important factor.

The eraser is a great tip! Most likely a lot safer than the heat. Hopefully I won't need to try it. I hate mistakes.
