ALPS wrapper pedal "crackling"

This morning I noticed my wrapper foot pedal "crackling" or "arcing" some after using it at very slow speeds and releasing the pedal.

Opened the pedal and I see some black discoloration where the brass (?) bar makes contact to the metal button switch in the rheostat module. I'm guessing that the spring is perhaps not releasing fully when I let of the pedal, allowing some bare amount of contact to still be made...

Any one had similar experience and suggestion on how to resolve? I'm going to pick up some electrical contact cleaner and clean up the brass bar contact to remove the carbon from any arching and see if that helps - but didn't know if there were other remedies

It happens quite often with those type non solid-state pedals. But they tend to keep on working.

Michael,

Perhaps you want to "upgrade" your foot pedal to a full electronic control pedal.

For the money, right now, this pedal is the best value on the market. Precise control and long lived.

Found this helpful link - [sewway.com]

I went ahead and pulled apart the rheostat, opening the carbon disc chamber to inspect the disc check and they looked ok - so I just cleaned up the button & bar contact and put it all back together - there is some play/adjustment in the rheostat module in terms of alignment vs the pedal plunger so I adjusted that forward so the pedal contacts sooner. In some quick test this seems to take the arcing out for now...

thanks - what I need to do is find time from building rods to switch everything over to the DC motor & pedal... :)

Michael, when you move over to DC you'll ask yourself why you didn't do it sooner. Roger hooked me up.
