I am looking to convert a 1 piece heavy spinning surf rod into a 2 piece rod by using a removable reel seat and rear grip section. I see a couple options for buying complete sets with an aluminum rear grip, but I would like to build my own using an aluminum reel seat w/ ferrule. The only option I am seeing is a Pacific Bay Channel Lock seat, are there any other options currently available? The main reason for making my own is that I would like a longer rear grip than what I see available, and I really don't want/need an aluminum rear grip.
Thank You Steve Re: 1 to 2 piece rod conversion help

Steve,
It is likely that it is much easier and the finished job will be more secure if you just pick up a new 2 piece blank and build yourself a new rod. Figure out the rear grip and build the rod like you want it. Best wishes Re: 1 to 2 piece rod conversion help

Hmm, thought I made a post. Guess I forgot to click on the button.
Doesn't seem to be many choices these days. Add Alutecnos to your short list. If willing to look at NOS solutions Lakeland and Fuji both used to have offerings. Assuming this is for shark I'd go aluminum which take Fuji off the table. If you are cutting a one piece blank I'd be concerned about its strength when cut so high up and glued into a ferule. Might do better to pick a "stubbie" blank that will give you the desired final length. What you use below the reel seat could be anything from aluminum tubing with a covering, to wood, to carbon tube, to fiberglass. Might give a shout out to Stuart and see if they will sell you a long enough TuffButt with a reel seat that has a ferule. IIRC it used to be a standard offering. I agree with Roger that it will probably work out better/cheaper/easier to just get a two piece rod. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: 1 to 2 piece rod conversion help

Roger, Thanks for the input. I am new to any heavy build like this so I figured I could work out all the details around the detachable butt by converting the rod I already have. A 2 piece rod may be in the future but I just have to give this a shot.
Russ, Thanks for all your suggestions. Shark rod, yes. And I am wondering about the strength too since it will only be glued into the ferrule I guess about 2 inches? As I have mentioned, I am new to any of this stuff so I'd rather learn on this than on a complete new build. I'll check into Lakeland and Stuart and see what I come up with.
