Kent, I’m sure you have not had problems with micro guide pullout, but believe me it does happen, no matter what the cause. I have replaced pulled out micro guides on several different brands of casting rods, what they all had in common were small foot micro guides (size 4 and smaller). Because of this, foot size is probably a contributing factor. I’m also sure that not every microguide rod will have mid rod pullout problems, but some certainly do. So wrapping technique is probably another contributing factor. When I replace these guides, with a matching micro guide, I always do a locking wrap and have not have any returned because of guide pullouts. A few people have had me replace all the micro guides on their rods with the Fuji KR micro guides, and again no problems with pullouts, but I always do a locking wrap for added security. Because of the microguide replacements I have done I literally have hundred of salvaged micro guides with small feet. I have absolutely no problem with you not doing a locking wrap, but I like them and they are very fast easy to do and for me it’s a win win solution. Bother thing that makes a custom rod custom.

If there is a significant chance one of your single-foot guides will be struck with a 30# plus blow parallel to the rod blank and toward the foot of the rod blank a single or even a double Forhan Wrap may not be up to the challenge. Double-foot guides are preferable in such environments, Re: Locking Wrap Method?

Your comment is a perfect example as to why I don't bother , a 30 plus pound blow lol. Re: Locking Wrap Method?

My experinece with the trolling motor with the rod wrapped around its shaft indicates that the Forhan wrap is stronger than the guides and is in fact up to any conceivable challenge-Any more challenge wouold break the rod and or the guides. The guides bend before they pull out. And it meets the chllenge with no significant weight penaly, unlike the action-numbing weight of double foot guides. Re: Locking Wrap Method?

I have found that rods wrapped around trolling motors, gasoline motors, steam engines and rods draped over the tailgates of pickup trucks exhibit the same results. Re: Locking Wrap Method?

And if the Forhan wrap is used, the guides will stilll be in place. And if it's a Point Blank, it may not fail. This one amazingly did not. Re: Locking Wrap Method?

Mark,
Thank you very much for your photo. No worries about the spelling of my name. Mentors of mine in the construction business have created a tendency in me to over-build projects. This mentality makes it difficult for me to recognize that in rod building, sometimes less is more. However, a lock of some sort will, if nothing else, give me peace of mind. I agree that if I just make it part of my process, the little bit of time spent will be worth while. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
